Room for Rent in Richmond, VA: How to Rent a Room on CoRent
A step-by-step guide to renting a private room in a shared Richmond home on CoRent: what is included, the cost compared with a whole place, ID verification, applying and paying rent.

Looking for a room for rent in Richmond, VA? On CoRent you create a free account, verify your ID once, apply to a room in the app, and move in on the date you picked. There is no application fee. Rent is paid weekly or monthly, by card or bank account, and everyone you live with has verified their ID too.
This guide covers what a room in a shared home includes, what it costs compared with renting a whole place, how applying works, and when you get the address. Everything here comes from the CoRent renters page, the fees page and the Richmond rooms page.
What you get when you rent a room in a shared home
A room on CoRent is a private bedroom in a house you share with housemates. You get your own room with a door that closes. You share the kitchen, bathrooms and living areas.
The listing shows photos and house details, the rent, and the area the house is in: the city and ZIP code. It does not show the street address. That is on purpose. The exact address is shared after your booking is confirmed, so the people who know where the house is are the people who live there.
Right now the Richmond rooms page lists open homes in Richmond ZIP codes 23222, 23227 and 23294, with nearby homes in Petersburg and Colonial Heights. Those change as rooms fill and open, so check the Richmond page for today's list.
A room for rent in Richmond, VA vs. a whole place
The renters page has a calculator that compares a whole place with a room, and you can enter your own numbers. Its example looks like this, per month:
- Whole place: $1,650 rent, $300 utilities, $70 internet. Total: $2,020 a month, or about $466 a week. You pay every bill.
- Room on CoRent: $650 rent, $80 utility share, internet included in your share. Total: $730 a month, or about $168 a week.
In that example the room saves $1,290 a month, which is $15,480 a year. Those are example amounts, not a quote for any particular room. Some hosts include utilities in the rent; others split them between housemates, and you pay your share in the app. Ask the host which applies to the room before you apply.
How to apply: ID verification, then the app
Here is the process, start to finish:
- Create a free account. Signing up costs nothing.
- Verify your ID once. You scan a government ID and take a selfie, and the two are matched. You do this one time, not for every room. The host never sees your ID or your selfie.
- Search by city and move-in date. Pick the date you want to move in. Rooms in Richmond, Petersburg and Colonial Heights are on the Richmond page and in the all rooms list.
- Apply in the app. There is no application fee.
- The host reviews and confirms. The host looks at your application and confirms the booking. When that happens, you get the street address.
Everyone who rents a room on CoRent has gone through the same ID check. That is what "ID-verified housemates" means: the people you share the kitchen with have proved who they are, the same way you did.
Paying rent: weekly or monthly, card or bank
When you book, you choose weekly or monthly rent. Autopay then collects it on the same day each week or month. You pay by card or by bank account, and there is a processing fee on each payment. Your exact fee is shown at checkout before you pay. The fees page spells out how the fee is calculated:
- Card: based on 2.9% plus 30 cents per payment.
- Bank account: based on 0.8%, up to $5 per payment.
- A full month by bank account: the fee is waived. You pay $0 in processing fees.
The renters page shows what that looks like on a $650-a-month room ($150 a week):
- Weekly by card: $4.79 per payment, about $20.76 a month in fees.
- Weekly by bank account: $1.21 per payment, about $5.24 a month.
- Monthly by card: $19.73 per payment.
- Monthly by bank account: $0, waived.
So the cheapest way to pay is a full month at a time from your bank account. Weekly rent costs a little more in fees but spreads the payments out, which some people prefer. Pick the one that fits how you get paid.
Some hosts also list move-in amounts. You see those before you pay, not after.
Your rights do not change because it is a room
Renting a room in a shared home is still renting. The federal government's plain-language page on tenant rights covers fair housing, discrimination and where to go for help. In Virginia, the Fair Housing Office handles complaints and explains the protected classes. If a listing or a host treats you differently because of who you are, those are the places to start.
Questions people ask before they apply
