Pay rent with bank account on CoRent and it usually costs less than paying by card. If you pay a full month at a time by bank account, the processing fee is waived. This post shows how the fees compare, how autopay works, and what to check in your account so a payment does not bounce.

Pay rent with bank account or card: how the fees compare

Every rent payment on CoRent carries a processing fee. Card payments cost more than bank payments, and the exact fee is shown at checkout before you pay. You are never asked to guess.

The fees page explains the basis for each. A card payment is based on 2.9% plus 30 cents. A bank account payment is based on 0.8%, up to $5. When you pay a full month by bank account, the fee is waived and you pay $0.

You choose weekly or monthly rent when you book, and autopay charges on the same day each week or month. If you are still deciding between the two schedules, read weekly room rental or monthly rent.

What the fees look like in an example

The renters page shows an example room at $650 a month, or $150 a week. These numbers are an example, not a quote for your room. Your own fee appears at checkout.

  • Weekly by card: $4.79 per payment, about $20.76 in fees per month
  • Weekly by bank account: $1.21 per payment, about $5.24 in fees per month
  • Monthly by card: $19.73 per payment, $19.73 in fees per month
  • Monthly by bank account: $0, because the fee is waived on a full month

In that example, paying a full month by bank account saves the most. The page labels it the best value. Weekly bank payments cost much less than weekly card payments, though, so if weekly rent suits your paycheck, a bank account still helps.

Remember what else goes into your monthly cost. Some hosts include utilities in rent, and others split them between housemates, which you pay in the app. Ask the host which applies before you apply. Our guide to what is included in a furnished room explains what to check.

What paying by bank account means

When you pay from a bank account, the money moves by electronic transfer between your bank and the payee's. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau explains that an ACH transaction is an electronic money transfer made between banks and credit unions. Bill payments and recurring monthly debits commonly work this way.

You do not mail a check or carry cash. You choose weekly or monthly rent and pick bank account as your payment method, and autopay charges on the same day each week or month. You pick a move-in date when you apply, and your host confirms the booking before the first payment is due.

Keep your balance ready on payment day

Autopay is convenient, but it only works if the money is there. The CFPB's page on automatic payments from a bank account warns that if your balance is too low when a payment is due, both your bank and the company can charge fees, which can add up quickly.

A few habits keep you out of trouble:

  • Know your payment day. If you pay weekly, put the weekday on your calendar. If you pay monthly, note the date.
  • Keep a cushion in the account on the day autopay runs, not only on payday.
  • Check your balance after you get paid and before rent is due.
  • If you change banks, update the account in the app before the next payment.
  • Contact your host or support at support@corent.ai if you expect a payment to be late.

If you are not sure which way to go, choose the schedule that matches how you get paid. A weekly paycheck fits weekly rent. A monthly paycheck fits monthly rent, and a bank account is the cheaper way to pay it.

Questions to ask before you pick a schedule

Answer these before your first payment. They take five minutes and save you from surprises.

  • What day do I get paid, and does it line up with weekly or monthly rent?
  • What is my total for the first month, including my share of utilities?
  • Does the host list move-in amounts, and have I seen them before paying?
  • Is there enough in my account for the first autopay, plus a cushion?
  • Do I know who to contact if something changes?

Write the answers next to your move-in date. If a number is missing, ask the host or email support@corent.ai before you book.
