You can pay rent online on CoRent weekly or monthly, by card or bank account. A processing fee applies to each rent payment and is shown at checkout before you pay. The fee is waived when you pay a full month by bank account.

This guide explains each part so there are no surprises: how often you pay, which method to pick, what the fee is and where to check it, and what to keep for your own records.

How you pay rent online on CoRent

When you rent a room, you pay through the app. You choose a schedule that fits how you get paid, then pick a card or a bank account.

  • Weekly rent keeps each payment smaller.
  • Monthly rent means one payment a month.

Neither is better for everyone. Our guide to weekly room rental or monthly rent walks through when each one fits a budget. Read it before you choose.

Signing up on CoRent is free, and there is no application fee. You verify your ID once with a government ID and a selfie match, and a host never sees your ID or selfie. You can see how the full process works in how to rent a room in Richmond, VA.

The processing fee, and when it is waived

A processing fee applies to each rent payment. CoRent shows it at checkout, so you see the amount before you confirm. That is the moment to check it.

The fee is waived when you pay a full month by bank account. If you pay weekly, or you pay by card, expect the fee to apply. If your pay schedule allows it, paying a full month by bank account is the way to avoid it.

You can read how fees work for each side on the fees page. Hosts pay a separate 5% platform fee on the rent they collect. That is the host's fee, not an extra charge added to your rent.

Do not guess at the fee. Look at the checkout screen every time, and compare options before you pay.

Card or bank account: what to think about

Both work. Here is what to weigh.

  • Bank account: no processing fee on a full month paid this way. It takes the money straight from your account, so make sure the balance is there.
  • Card: convenient and quick. The processing fee applies. If you carry a balance on a credit card, interest can make rent more expensive, so think about that before you use one.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau publishes plain-language help on money transfers and bank accounts at Ask CFPB. It is a good place to learn how electronic transfers work in general.

Whatever you choose, pay on time. A missed payment can cause problems with your host, so set a reminder a day or two before the due date.

What Virginia law says about rent payments and fees

Virginia has rules for how landlords accept rent. The state code says a landlord cannot charge a processing fee unless it also offers a payment option without extra fees. For card or electronic payments, any fee is limited to the landlord's actual third-party costs. Small landlords with four or fewer units do not have to accept debit or credit cards. It also requires a written receipt when a tenant pays rent in cash or by money order.

You can read the text yourself in Virginia Code section 55.1-1204. This is general information, not legal advice. If you think a fee is wrong, ask your host first, then contact a tenant-rights or legal aid resource.

Keep your own records

Treat rent like any other bill you want to be able to prove.

  1. Save the confirmation after every payment, by screenshot or email.
  2. Note the date, the amount and the method.
  3. Keep your lease and house rules where you can find them.
  4. Check your bank or card statement against what you paid.

If a payment ever looks wrong, you will have what you need to sort it out quickly. Raise it with your host or CoRent right away. Waiting makes a small problem harder to fix.

Utilities can be shared in some homes and are paid in the app on top of rent, so check the listing for what is included before you apply. Our post on what is included in a furnished room for rent lists good questions to ask.

Find a room and see the total

The cheapest room on paper is not always the cheapest room to live in. Add rent, utilities and any fees you will pay, then compare. When you are ready, browse rooms for rent in Richmond, Petersburg or Colonial Heights, or see everything on the properties page.

Plan around your pay schedule

Line up your rent schedule with the days you get paid. If your income arrives weekly, weekly rent can keep your account from swinging. If you are paid once a month, monthly rent paid by bank account is simple and avoids the processing fee.

Whichever you pick, leave a small cushion in the account so a payment does not bounce. Then check the checkout screen each time so the fee never surprises you.
